Dating in the US is typically a personal choice, not a family choice. There is a large factor of independence when it comes to dating. It is not improper for a woman to ask a man on a date. Expressing your feelings is wanted in American culture. Tell the other person how you are feeling - either way.

The key to a healthy relationship in the U.S. is independence; love yourself, set boundaries, and respect your partner's space. 

Staying Safe

Create a safety plan prior to going on the date with someone you don't know. Let a friend or family member know where you are going and who you are going with. If you feel uncomfortable during the date, be sure to have an exit strategy. Have a friend call, tell them you aren't feeling well, or if you feel that you are in danger, go to the bar and order an "angel shotLinks to an external site.". The bartender will know that you are uncomfortable or in danger, and will provide resources to get you home safely.
