Jamuhuri Day or Independence Day: December 12
Jamhuri Day is a national holiday in Kenya that is celebrated on December 12th every year. The term "Jamhuri" means "republic" in Swahili, and this day commemorates Kenya's transition from a Dominion of the British Empire to a fully independent republic on December 12, 1964.
The celebrations of Jamhuri Day usually begin with a ceremony held at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. The ceremony is attended by government officials, foreign dignitaries, and citizens. During the ceremony, the President of Kenya raises the national flag, and a military parade takes place, showcasing the country's armed forces.
A major highlight of the celebrations is the President's address to the nation, where he reflects on the journey of Kenya as an independent nation, acknowledges its achievements, and outlines the plans for the future. This speech is broadcast on national television and radio. Apart from the official festivities, various cultural activities and performances also take place across the country. This includes traditional music and dance performances, exhibitions of Kenyan art and crafts, and sports competitions. Additionally, many Kenyans take this opportunity to gather with their families and friends for picnics or barbecues, enjoying a day off work.
Common meals prepared include:
1. Nyama Choma: Grilled meat, particularly goat and beef, is a popular dish during festive occasions in Kenya. It is often accompanied by side dishes like ugali (maize porridge) or sukuma wiki (collard greens).
2. Pilau: A fragrant rice dish cooked with spices, meat (usually chicken or beef), and vegetables.
3. Chapati: A type of flatbread made from wheat flour and commonly served with various stews, curries, or grilled meats.
