Random Acts of Kindness Day
Benefits of Kindness
Kindness is good for our wellbeing and increases the following:
- Oxytocin: Seeing kindness produces oxytocin, which helps lower blood pressure and improves our overall heart health. Oxytocin also increases self-esteem and optimism.
- Energy: Studies show that people often report feeling stronger and more energetic after helping others, and calmer and less depressed, with increased feelings of self-worth.
- Pleasure: Emory University research shows when you are kind to someone, your brain’s pleasure and reward centers perk up, as if you were the recipient of kindness—not the giver. This is called the “helper’s high.”
- Serotonin: Kindness stimulates the production of serotonin- a feel-good chemical that calms you down and makes you happy.
