Want to meet new friends?

Relocating to the U.S. means finding and creating a new social system. This is important for your transition; everyone needs friends and people they trust to lean on when times get hard! Below are tips on how to meet new people in the US.Links to an external site.

  • Start by learning and understanding American communication norms, including how to "small talk", avoiding too much eye contact,  and avoiding sensitive topics, like money/pay, politics, and relationships.
  • Find activities or hobbies in your area to meet others. Gyms, coffee shops, and restaurants/bars are great places to create small talk to create friendships.
  • Take English courses. You may meet others who have recently immigrated!
  • Find people from your culture. Search out Facebook groups in your area.
  • Go online! Sites like meetup.com or Bumble Friends are great ways to find like-minded people.
  • Ask people around you for help when you need it. Create relationships with those you see on a daily basis.
  • Don't be afraid to ask someone to hangout!
  • Be patient, but persistent. Not everyone will be a good match for you, but you have to put yourself out there to find people you want to be surrounded by!
